HeRoM indaga la collaborazione e competizione politica tra le basileiai ellenistiche durante l’apice del loro potere nel III secolo a.C. Analizza l’hard e il soft power delle entità politiche per far luce sulle dinamiche di potere formali e informali in atto nel sistema multipolare mediterraneo.
Inoltre la ricerca si occupa di studiare le entità politiche che, tra la battaglia di Isso (301 a.C.) e l’ascesa al trono di Antioco III (221 a.C.), iniziarono il “bandwagoning”, cioè ad allinearsi alle nuove potenze monarchiche ellenistiche. Mettendo in relazione i poli maggiori con le entità minori, l’indagine intende seguire l’impatto locale delle interazioni multipolari per chiarire come le entità politiche più deboli fossero coinvolte nella competizione geopolitica anche al di là delle questioni militari.
Il progetto infine prende in esame il cambiamento delle relazioni internazionali ellenistiche tra la sconfitta inflitta da Roma a Cartagine nel 202 a.C. e la morte di Antioco IV Epifane nel 164 a.C.

HeRoM explores the political cooperation between the Hellenistic basileiai in the 3rd century BCE. It examines the hard and soft power exercised by 3rd—and 2nd-century political actors to reveal the formal and informal power dynamics at work in Mediterranean multipolar systems. The research considers the political entities that began to ‘bandwagon’ with the new Hellenistic monarchical powers between the Battle of Ipsus (301 BCE) and the rise to the throne of Antiochus III (221 BCE).
By linking major poles with minor entities, the study aims to trace the local effects of multipolar interactions and clarify how weaker political entities were involved in geopolitical competition beyond the field of war. The project also considers the transformation of Hellenistic international relations between the Roman defeat of Carthage in 202 BCE and the death of Antiochus IV Epiphanes in 164 BCE.
The research will be carried out by the University of Bergamo Unit.
