Il convegno è l’incontro iniziale del progetto PRIN 2022 “HeRoM: Hellenistic and Roman Multipolarity” (2022TW7PHJ), ed è organizzato dall’Unità di Ricerca di Torino coordinata da Mattia Balbo in collaborazione con Marcello Valente dell’Università degli Studi del Piemonte Orientale “Amedeo Avogadro”.
Il convegno indaga, con approccio interdisciplinare, le istanze economiche sottese all’instaurazione di rapporti diplomatici e scontri bellici fra i Romani e i regni ellenistici nella fase della prima espansione romana nel Mediterraneo, nel III e II secolo a.C., che hanno segnato per entrambi i popoli una significativa cesura storica. Particolare attenzione è prestata alle premesse economiche sottese alla genesi del sistema provinciale romano, alle reciproche influenze fra modelli greci e modelli romani nella gestione dell’economia, alla politica economica della res publica e a quella coeva delle poleis greche e dei regni ellenistici. Vista l’ampiezza del tema, si procede per case studies, identificando singoli aspetti in cui, in determinate aree geografiche particolarmente significative, emergono gli interessi economici della nascente repubblica imperiale e come questi interessi incontrano (e si scontrano con) il variegato mondo greco ellenistico.

The conference is the opening event of the Project PRIN “HeRoM: Hellenistic and Roman Multipolarity” (2022TW7PHJ), and is organized by the Turin Research Unit coordinated by Mattia Balbo in collaboration with Marcello Valente of the University of Eastern Piedmont.
The conference investigates, with an interdisciplinary approach, the economic instances underlying the establishment of diplomatic relations and warlike clashes between the Romans and the Hellenistic kingdoms in the phase of the first Roman expansion in the Mediterranean, in the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, which marked a significant historical caesura for both peoples. Particular attention is paid to the economic premises underlying the genesis of the Roman provincial system, the mutual influences between Greek and Roman models in the management of the economy, and the economic policy of the res publica and the coeval policy of the Greek poleis and Hellenistic kingdoms. Given the breadth of the topic, we proceed by case studies, identifying individual aspects in which, in certain particularly significant geographic areas, the economic interests of the nascent imperial republic emerged and how these interests met (and clashed with) the diverse Hellenistic Greek world.
